Statement on desecration of Christian statue in Lebanon

ACN calls on all to pray for the Christian communities in Lebanon, and for all those involved in regional conflicts to uphold and respect religious freedom and respect.

Aid to the Church in Need has taken note of the images recently circulating that show the destruction of a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon.

According to public statements issued on 19 and 20 April 2026, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed that the images are authentic and depict an IDF soldier deployed in southern Lebanon. The IDF has stated that it views the incident with great seriousness and that the soldier’s actions are inconsistent with the values and conduct expected of its troops. At this stage, no further official details have been released regarding disciplinary measures, and the matter is under investigation through the chain of command. The military has also indicated that it will assist the local Christian community in restoring the damaged statue.

ACN expresses its deep sorrow at the desecration of a sacred Christian symbol and firmly condemns this act. It also expresses its full solidarity with the local Christian community in Lebanon, which has already endured years of insecurity and instability.

Respect for religious symbols and places of worship is a fundamental principle, even – and especially – in times of conflict. No circumstance can justify acts that wound the religious dignity of communities or show contempt for what is sacred to them.

ACN takes note that an investigation has been initiated and that steps toward accountability and restoration have been announced. Such measures are essential to uphold respect and help prevent similar acts in the future. Their transparent and credible implementation will be important in reaffirming respect for what is sacred to millions of Christians worldwide.

Faithful to its mission, ACN stands alongside Christians who suffer, offering spiritual closeness and concrete support wherever faith, dignity and religious freedom are at risk. Aid to the Church in Need invites all to pray for the Christian communities in Lebanon and throughout the region, and renews its call for the protection of religious freedom and respect for what is sacred in every tradition.
