Jan Zelazny

Father Professor Jan Żelazny was born on 8 August 1965 in Katowice. He is a graduate of the Jagiellonian University, where he obtained a Master’s degree in physics in 1987. However, it was theology that became his vocation – he completed his studies at the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Kraków, obtaining both a Master’s degree in theology and a licentiate in canon law. In 1995, he defended his doctoral thesis on Christology, and in 2006 he obtained his habilitation at the Pontifical John Paul II University, specialising in Syriac ecclesiology.

His research into patristic literature in the Syriac-speaking tradition has resulted in numerous publications and many academic visits to the Middle East, where, among other things, he studied Aramaic and collaborated with leading specialists in the field of Oriental patristics.

Priesthood and pastoral work

Fr. Żelazny was ordained a priest in 1991, beginning his ministry as curate at the parish of the 10,000 Martyrs in Niepołomice. Over the years, he held many pastoral roles, including as prefect of studies at the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Kraków, as well as providing pastoral assistance in the parishes of Kraków-Mistrzejowice and Jordanów.

However, his commitment was not limited to Poland. From 1994, he was associated with the Italian branch of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), where he carried out pastoral and academic work, helping, amongst other places, in Reggio di Calabria, where he served at the Cathedral of Maria Assunta.

Many years of work on behalf of Christians in the Middle East

For years, Fr. Żelazny has been coordinating aid for Christians in the Middle East, working in collaboration with the Maronite and Syriac Catholic Churches. His extensive network of contacts and the experience gained during numerous visits to Lebanon, as well as his work with the French association L’Œuvre d’Orient, make him a leading expert on the situation of Christians in the region.
