By the end of 2018, 70.8 million persons were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations, according to the UN Refugee Agency. The civil war in South Sudan has claimed thousands of lives and driven 3.3 million people from their homes. Currently, 1.9 million people remain displaced inside the country, while 2,341,322 South Sudanese sought asylum in the neighboring countries, most of them in Uganda. There are many refugee settlements in the north of Uganda, an estimated 1.3 million persons live in the region, and 63.3% of them came from South Sudan. Many of them experienced severe trauma, for instance, children who were soldiers and trained to kill. These people need not only food and shelter but they need to be reintroduced to normal life. The Emmaus Center provides spiritual and pastoral care, catechesis, and the sacraments for the refugees in Uganda.

TESTIMONIES

Christine Du Coudray, ACN’s head of section responsible for Uganda.

“The young refugees have gone through major traumas: some of them saw their parents killed, others suffered physical violence. The Emmaus community has a project to accompany them in the healing and forgiving process. They pray together and offer spiritual comfort”

Patrick Kokole, 25 years-old South Sudanese who lives in the Bidibidi refugee camp in Uganda.

“The catechists John and Santos from the Emmaus community changed my life. I am grateful for what they have done for me, and for what they do to others like me.”

If this project is funded, your gift will be used to support other Christians in Need, for instance, such as these:

Due to the civil war in South Sudan, all community networks for evangelization, social development, and welfare have been derailed. With your help, we can support the community of Tombura Yambio to carry out their pastoral mission

One of the missions of the diocese of Alexandria is to bring the young people closer to God and more active in their parish communities. With your help, 150 young people from Alexandria, Cairo, and Delta can take part in a spiritual formation.

The pastoral camps are one of the most important activities in the Latin Patriarchate in Palestine, Jordan, and Israel. Every year, more than 60,000 children and teenagers take part in the pastoral camps. With your help, they can carry out their mission.
